FAQs
There are so many travel sites, which one is right for me?
Good question - it's a specialized field with different sites for your different needs! If you already know exactly what you want to book, you should be on sites such as Expedia, Southwest, or Hilton. If you have a range of options in mind but are shopping for the lowest price, you should try FareCast, FareChase, or SideStep. If you want to read a review, read a blog, or skim trip journals, you'll want to visit TripAdvisor, RealTravel, or Yahoo! Trip Planner. If you need help deciding what to book, where to go, where to stay, or what to do, come to UpTake first. We are here to help!
When I'm dreaming up a trip, I want options. Lots and lots of options...
Our semantic search application brings together more than a thousand sites, 400,000 hotels and attractions in the U.S. and 20 million opinions from all over the web so you can find what you need in one place. In business-speak, some people refer to many of those options as the "long tail". We think about those options as what helps make your trips distinct and memorable.
...but I also want them to be organized, and meaningful to me.
That's why we enable new ways of filtering through our collection to get the recommendations that are most relevant to your preferences and priorities. Tell us who you are traveling with, the kind of destination you are looking for, and what you like to do, and we'll sift through our information to deliver the right getaway for you. For example, we return one set of hotel and activity recommendations when you are traveling to Monterey for a romantic getaway, and a different set when you are going to Monterey with the family to visit the aquarium and hang out on the beaches.
How do you deliver on this promise?
It's simple: we index the collective wisdom of the entire web. Our recommendations are based on a gestalt of 20 million voices collected from over a thousand sources including web sites, books and magazines. But we don't make you pick through all that detail; we organize and present the most relevant opinions and product details in a "federated" and/or "universal" search display based on what we know about your travel preferences. We will help you make informed decisions - then you can price compare and book on a myriad of other sites.
Are your results skewed toward your advertisers?
Absolutely not. We make our money only if we provide information you need to make a decision and you elect to click on an advertiser link to check availability and/or book. We believe the best way to help you make the right decision is to present you with the relevant opinions of travelers and product information from all over the web in an unbiased fashion. There will be many times where the options that might be most relevant for you might be options that we cannot make money on (e.g. motels, beaches, landmarks), but we are confident that if we do a good job of helping you make a better decision that leads to a better trip, you will return to UpTake. We DO make money by selling ads, but you will see those ads clearly marked.
Is there an easy way to try it out?
We invite you to get started - it takes no more than a few seconds to search for you preferences and tell us what type of vacation you want based on who you are traveling and why you need to get away. Our semantic search technology does the rest. Within moments, you can choose to drill down into individual selections, or refine your results by telling us more about your preferences... always in a simple, intuitive way. Happy trip planning!
Why did you change your name from Kango to UpTake?
We always liked the name Kango because of its positive energy. We think the name UpTake retains that positive energy and describes our core offering - the gathering, filtering and distributing of the Web's collective wisdom to help consumers plan their trips.
What does UpTake mean? How does it relate to travel?
Uptake, the word, means to quickly grasp the key facts. UpTake, as our name, means we collect and organize millions of bits of disorganized data for travelers to help them plan a trip to meet their preferences. Each syllable implies a sense of travel. Up, can mean being uplifted in spirit and happy. "Take" conveys the ideas of taking control of your trip and taking off to the great unknown. Most travelers look forward to their next trip with eager anticipation and who doesn't think of taking off work or taking off on a vacation? UpTake offers the promise of discovering an escape from the routine.
Are you planning to maintain the Kango and UpTake sites?
UpTake is a new site. Kango has been built and promoted for more than six months to our customers, the media and the search engines. We will continue to maintain two sites and slowly transition to UpTake during the next few months. Both sites will offer the same information.
We welcome suggestions on how to improve our service for you. Please email us your feedback - the good, the ugly, the things we should add and what needs to be fixed! We appreciate your input.
